Correctional Officers Association of Delaware Supports the Blake Schwarz Suicide Prevention Act

The Correctional Officers Association of Delaware (COAD) proudly announces its support for the Corrections Officer Blake Schwarz Suicide Prevention Act, legislation designed to address the growing mental health crisis impacting correctional professionals across the nation.

Correctional officers work in one of the most demanding professions in public safety. Every shift brings exposure to stress, trauma, critical incidents, staffing shortages, and emotional burdens that often extend far beyond the walls of our institutions. While correctional professionals dedicate themselves to protecting communities and maintaining safety, too many struggle silently with the unseen weight of the job.

The Blake Schwarz Suicide Prevention Act was introduced to help change that reality.

Named in honor of Correctional Officer Blake Schwarz, this legislation aims to create resources specifically tailored to correctional professionals by supporting confidential mental health services, suicide prevention efforts, wellness initiatives, and grant opportunities for agencies seeking to strengthen officer support systems.

For too long, correctional officers have faced barriers to seeking help—including stigma, fear of judgment, and concerns about professional consequences. This legislation recognizes a truth that many in corrections already understand: mental health support is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

COAD believes that supporting the well-being of correctional professionals directly impacts officer safety, family stability, workforce retention, and institutional effectiveness. Strength is not measured by suffering in silence. Real strength includes recognizing when support is needed and creating cultures where seeking help is encouraged—not discouraged.

As advocates for correctional professionals throughout Delaware, we stand alongside organizations and leaders across the country calling for meaningful action to support the mental health of those who serve behind the walls.

We encourage our members, community partners, and supporters to learn more about the Blake Schwarz Suicide Prevention Act and join the conversation surrounding mental health in corrections.

Because those who protect others deserve support too.
